Child Abuse

My current major is social work and I plan to specialize in children’s welfare specifically in the group and foster home system. Child abuse within these homes occurs more often than reported, one of the most recent reported cases happened in Southern California at a Christian group home where a couple (Kang Won and Jung Hwan Lee) are being accused of keeping the children in terrible conditions and forcing them to attend religious services and punishing them if they don’t.see-what-children-feel-like-stop-child-abuse-8860789-295-3211

Punishments included being made to stand by a tree for up to four hours, translate Bible verses for an entire day and sleep outside at night. It is also being reported that as many as 80 children were living in the two different residents that the couple is said to have owned. The homes were described as having swarms of flies, broken furniture and missing bedroom doors. Some residents slept in bunk beds crowded into small rooms with 1-inch pads instead of mattresses. One resident lived in a “storage room” and others in an attic

This is just one of the many heartbreaking stories of the child welfare system in the United States. Putting a stop to this form of abuse is going to be an uphill battle because it’s so often swept under the rug and undocumented. The best way to make a step in the right direction is to make these children comfortable enough to open up and tell what’s going on when in these living arrangements.

My Contribution

While working on my first think tank assignment with my group we all put in a fair amount of time and effort into our paper on formulating an argument. We decided to argue both sides of why marijuana should and should not be legalized in the United States. To accomplish this we split the group in half with one side stating the reasons as to why it should be legalized and the other sided stating the reasons as to why it shouldn’t be. I decided to be on side for the legalization of marijuana because I felt that I could find plenty of evidence supporting that side. While doing research I found many of interesting facts and reasons as to why marijuana should be legalized but one reason I found very interesting in particular is how the money used for the war on pot could be used in many more effective ways. Because of that i chose to specifically concentrate on the war on pot and how much the U.S spends on it every year, once i found all of the necessary information I wrote a one page paper on my findings. Once everyone was done we came together and took out and added what was necessary from everyone’s individual research to create our paper.

Values & Ethics

If I was to see my friends boyfriend out with another girl while my friend thought he was home studying before jumping to conclusions and calling her I would first investigate the potential situation.lhhatl

I would start off by watching them from afar to get a feel of how they act towards each other such as friendly, affectionate, hostile etc…  After having a somewhat understanding of what’s going on I would make my presence known to them by speaking to him. While talking to him I would also be evaluating his mood and the way he acted towards me being present. Once the conversation is over I would gather my information and call my friend and report to her my findings whether they be good or bad because I feel like she deserves to know and if it was me in that situation I would also want to know.

Another reason I would tell her isbecause even if he wasn’t doing anything sneaky my friend still believed that he was somewhere the he wasn’t which in turn makes him a liar. If I didnt tell her and she later found out from another source that I knew since the beginning it would affect our friendship negatively. She would begin to feel like i’m not her real friend and she would also feel as though she couldnt trust me. I know she would feel that way because that’s how I would feel if the roles were reversed.
